DR JOHN TORLINE IS A SPECIALIST PSYCHIATRIST BASED IN CAPE TOWN

Dr Torline is a specialist psychiatrist based at Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Cape Town. His practice focuses on outpatient care for adults aged 18 to 60 and emphasises individualised treatment that may include medical assessment, lifestyle guidance, psychotherapy, and the considered use of psychiatric medication. Patients who require inpatient psychiatric care are admitted to Life St Vincent’s Clinic, where a multidisciplinary team collaborates to provide comprehensive treatment. He works closely with psychologists, physicians, and other health professionals when collaborative care is appropriate.

Dr Torline obtained his medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and later specialised in Psychiatry at the University of Cape Town (UCT). Earlier in his career he worked in complementary health; although he no longer practises in that field, the experience contributed to a broader understanding of patient wellbeing.

His professional experience includes clinical work at the Maternal Mental Health Clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital, as well as research and consultancy at the Groote Schuur Transgender Clinic. He serves as an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town, where he contributes to teaching and research supervision. In 2024, together with a team of specialists, he helped introduce a virtual reality service at Vincent Pallotti Hospital, expanding access to this treatment modality.

In his clinical work, Dr Torline aims to integrate current scientific evidence with careful clinical assessment and the individual needs of each patient.
